Cabrio ride hints : California Highway 1

Posted on 11:34 by Unknown
This was one of my dreams, that came true. The California 1 leading along of the pacific coastline in California appears in several roadtrip charts. We did this back in January, driving from San Francisco (rather from Silicon Valley) to Los Angeles. Not in a convertible, it wasn't a right time for it. But in case I would be there again in summer and would have time, I would do it immediately again.

Peaceful road, beautiful cliffs falling into the ocean, impressive houses on the coast and many scenic points. A real cruising road.

Plan ahead, at least our road was 240 miles long and it's at least a half day trip. There was only one petrol station somewhere in the middle, so better tank before, at least for peace of mind.

You have to have luck for good weather. Not only because of the convertible temperatures, but also because of the sidewind from the ocean, which, when it's strong changes your interior into a laundromat and can even fold down your wind deflector. Through our drive there wasn't by far not that windy.

There are many nice places, described in National Geographics road trip section. You will drive along several state parks and protected areas. For a one day trip it seems to be impossible to visit them all, but if you have more time, the chance is definitely there. Some landmarks, such as the impressive Morro rock are to see from the road.

In a one-day version you have to count time for a lunch as well. There are some possibilities, mainly in the second half of the road on the map. We've randomly stopped in Cambria, where we had luck for a restaurant with very good seafood.

A couple of miles before San Simeon is an interesting place - an elephant seal rookery and vista point. There is a society protecting the elephant seals with a website and live webcam. It's a great and recommended stop. Here is the exact location on google maps.

For those of you, who love to do roadtrips as we do, this will be a really nice experience. More down south are many possibilities for overnight even if you didn't reserved anything in advance. This isn't a problem in this part of the world. Enjoy and if you did this trip, the comments are open :)

Saab 96 Monte Carlo 850 - a shout for help ?

Posted on 03:55 by Unknown
A couple of photos came today from the reader Bernard. These are taken somewhere near or in Brussels, but it's originally from the Czech Republic. The history is unknown for me. But it has racing cage inside and the Rh factor sign, so it was used for racing. Now it is standing somewhere in the backyard and rosting.

I don't know if it's for sale. But it's definitely a project worth. It's such a pity.

I've tried to search a bit as these were really not many in CZ. It's definitely not Zdenek Treybals (covered here) but the RacingSportsCars site had two, which could be it, namely this or this. Maybe someone knows ...

The Saab 96 850 Monte Carlo was built between 1966 and 1967. An homage to Erik Carlsson and Pat Moss.

update : it seems to be a car with a real racing history :

Back in 2009 this Saab was reported here on SaabsUnited as a racing car of Kamila Stara, a young lady which finished second in class in FIA Historic Hill Climing series. Here is the Saab in better years :

Saab 96 Monte Carlo 850, source : SaabsUnited

Indeed it seems to be the same Saab. It appears also in the Euromontagna archives as well as on a Kamila Stara postcard. Also it appears another driver, Petr Tykal used the Saab in races. And now where it ended ...:(

Appealing Saab taglines

Posted on 03:07 by Unknown

To produce an influential tagline is art and science together. Not everyone is capable of it, high quality is rare and that is what we see everyday in advertisements and on websites. I admit, the tagline of Saabism "All the good Saab things" is also not the best but I'm not a copywriter and the tagline comes from the time when I didn't had really a clean picture about the content. Which lasts until today :)

I've stumbled about two taglines, which I find very appealing and wonderful written.

The first one is at the Saab99turbo.com fan site and the Saablime facebook page. Probably the best I've seen :

"Not for everyone. Essential to a few."

The second appears on t-shirts produced by the organisers of the annual Saab meeting in Roudnice and says :

"Saab. Z osobních důvodů."

... which translated from czech means "for personal reasons".

Both of the taglines are here for a while. What is so appealing on them ? I'm not sure. probably the evocation of feeling to "be special" or to "be yourself". And both separates the Saab owner from the mainstream crowd. Which is a fact, but also a double-edged sword.

If you were touched by a similar Saab related tagline / slogan, feel free to write it in the discussion.

Roudnice

Posted on 14:00 by Unknown
Roudnice nad Labem is the place of the largest annual Saab convention in the Czech Republic. Location : ~50km north of Prague, close to the Hora Říp, a very important landmark of the czech history.

Everything was against the attendance, the rainy weather forecast, the always very busy May, the troubles with the owner of the field airport constantly increasing the rental price and the whole Saab situation. But I've decided to go. The same decision was made by ~150 other Saab owners and friends.

Known faces, friends, handshakes, smalltalks, smiles. And a lot of Saabs with all their details. Snabbers, liberals, a wurlitzer DJ, all kinds of old and new clothing with the logo, a bit of merchandise, the gruppendrive at the end. Wonderful as always. I'm looking forward for the next year and here are pictures, part #1. [part #2] [part #3]

There is also a part #2 and part #3 of the photos.

The custom numberplates

Posted on 14:58 by Unknown
The numberplates are a category by itself. It can help a car looking good. The different numberplates is one of my obsessions and I especially love the yellow background in the Netherlands and Luxembourg. For example look at this c900 convertible.

Here in Slovakia, you can buy for ~330 € another text for it. You have to keep the abbreviation for the city (BA/BL is for Bratislava) and than you have five letters of your own text. For a Saab such as BA-AERO1 etc.

In the neighbouring Hungary besides other things you can buy a different sized frame. On my recent short trip to Budapest I've seen a couple of them. One of them was on a Saab 9-3 Aero and it looked really good.

In order to keep the number private I've manipulated a bit the letters and numbers. Without some numbers it wouldn't be that nice.

The expected charisma

Posted on 16:08 by Unknown

This is a very exclusive Saab duet, not many of them are around. Such a combination is probably absolutely unique. There are mixed feelings about the 9-4X from some fans but the 9-5 is loved. Actually I love them both, I've been sitting in both and made a test drive in the 9-5 (sedan).

This photo aroused a quite emotional feeling in me. Especially because now are the days, when I would start to enjoy having one of these. If ... of course Saab would survive. I had to go for a different brand. It's fine but ...

Another reason for the emotion is, if you look at this and than compare with the crap that BAIC introduced a couple of weeks ago ? There are worlds in between ... but in the bitter reality Saab is in coma and BAIC lives.

It would be not good to start to be nostalgic, that the golden old times are over. Let's see what NEVS brings to the table. They have a huge responsibility. And it's not about 9-3 or 9-5. Whatever it will be it has to be excellent. And also serious to gain respect. These two Saabs on the photo are serious in how they look, feel and drive. Right now we're reading about batteries and drive ranges. That's not the whole thing. Charisma is probably the right word, what is expected now.

The rapid switch to summer

Posted on 11:25 by Unknown
This year the long winter here in central Europe switched to summer almost instantly. I realised that very significantly when stumbled on a photo taken by a friend on 1. April 2013. Normally it would be a April fool joke, but this year it was a reality. Temperature around -5°C.

Two weeks afterwards it was still snow everywhere. And than came the surprising switch. Within a week the temperatures climbed up to 25°C, even more. Questions like "where is the spring ?" started to appear all over the Internet. Meanwhile my Saab indicated 30°C even when not standing in the sun. The convertible season started. Actually the summer started. We could do a convertible ride last weekend.

28.4.2013

Are we with our cars responsible for that ? The ecologists say yes. The scientists say "not so sure". There might be the truth somewhere in between. So where are the electric cars then ?

Photo #1 © by Martina Mlcuchova, btw. a great concert photographer, check out MM music photo
