Posted on 02:41 by Unknown
Over 40 Saabs are already registered for the Saab Session Slovakia 2012 event taking place 12. - 14.10. in Mala Lucivna in the hills of Mala Fatra. Most of the types will come as well as some very rare pieces, some of them for first time to see in Slovakia.
Still some registrations are expected, so the number of cars will grow.
You can see most of the registered Saabs on the participants page of the event. You are welcome to attend, there is a very simple registration procedure necessary. All the informations are ready in slovak and in english.
It's a weekend and if the weather holds, than the sceneries in the Mala Fatra hills are simply beautiful. Beside the Saabs of course :)

Music for cabriolets : Talk Talk
Posted on 14:43 by Unknown
Talk Talk was a british trio, well known in the 80's for some of their commercial hits. They were also one of the few bands which could step beyond the typical 80's cliché. After their hectic hits era there was an evident desire to develop themselves to more advanced compositions and sound.
So in 1988 and 1991 they recorded two albums - Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock. Both are minimalistic, intimate, subtle and from time to time erasing the soft atmosphere with a very raw sound. Both albums are masterpieces, despite their declining sales figures, even after many years they are described as stable members of the family of timeless and influential albums, especially to musicians. Even nowadays.
Artists like Portishead or Radiohead are claiming to be influenced by Talk Talk.
The band disbanded after these two records with several explanations. After many years of being a fan and gathering all possible informations I read their end as a mixture of attrition of their musical expression with frustration from misunderstanding by the public. The description of these records as experimental seems not appropriate to me. This word describes seeking for new ways while Talk Talk knew exactly which way they want to go.
Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock are a stable part of my music collection in every mp3 player I've got as well as in every car I've driven. However this is not easy listening and requires attention.
They are both embedded in full length below. Both embeds are starting with my most favorite song of each record. Of course, if you wish, you can listen to them in the whole by moving the slider to the start.
Spirit of Eden, I believe in you

Uitverkocht

... means sold out in dutch. This is a scanned postcard from Saab which was sent to Rudy, a friend, writing the Save Saab Museum blog as well as the facebook page.
It was sent by the occasion of the new 9-5NG by Saab in the Netherlands. On the front side is written in Dutch (Sold Out) and on the back a story about the 96 and on the end a remark: do you want to drive in a legendary Saab? Check your mailbox.
A nice minimal design.

Reality check : in a search for a good 9-5
Posted on 14:34 by Unknown
Life circumstanes are steering me towards another Saab to the family. An everyday Saab, useful and enjoyable at the same time. A good service is around, a fair budget as well. Good. So a Saab configuration should come. After seeing so many Saabs I know exactly what I want.
It should be a used Saab 9-5 Aero Combi (wagon) around MY2005 (no Dame Edna), a 2.3 liter petrol. Manual transmission and different, than the standard grey dashboard - wooden or the Arc. Good condition, trustful history and fair price. After a Saab lover would be a big bonus. Location : LHD Europe, somewhere, from where the transport wouldn't cost a fortune (DE, NL, BE etc. SE as an option).
Problem ? They seem not to exist. While heating up the obvious websites, this combination seems to be gone. Local (SK, CZ) sources are dry. International websites (mobile, autoscout) as well.
Someone told me, that it will not be better and it might be true. An NG 9-5 is too expensive and no combi. A 9-3 ? I have one and want to try something else. Also some heretic ideas comes to my mind ...
Any ideas where else to look for ? Comment section or PM is open. Thanks a lot.

Saab vs. Corvette
Posted on 00:17 by Unknown
There is an article where Jay Leno speaks about his affection to Saabs. He has an 1958 Saab 93. Besides other things he says :
So I've tried to search that comic book and indeed, there is a copy of it. Here we go :
sources : 1 and 2
In fact I remember picking up a comic book, which I still have, which had a Corvette Stingray and a Saab, racing. It said a Corvette Stingray can beat a Saab but can it beat it on ice? And it showed the two coming around a corner, and I’m not sure how the Saab was able to do this, but for the illustration, the Saab is coming around a corner on three wheels with one in the air. I was never able to understand how the car was able to lift a wheel on ice, but hey that was the magic of having a Saab!

Lost in time
Posted on 14:30 by Unknown
This photo circulated over the blue social network. Besides the photo is cute and rare, the nice thing is, that its author found it and responded : "I took that picture at the Gistad Saab Swap meet in the early 90´s. Had one of those pedal cars when I was a kid :-)"
The photo was done in the analogue era and scanned in the digital. It doesn't happen too often, mainly because authors of old pictures are not very keen to join these supermodern webs. The reasons are to be respected as well as understood, but because of this so much unique pictures, manuals and stories would be and will be lost in time.
One may think "good so, it's past". But on the other hand, more of this kind of pictures would make many people happy. I'm not speaking about Saabs only nor about social networks ...
Therefore great job Martin B. and we're looking forward for unscanned pics from your collection :)

Update 3 : På Taket Saab 96 at Red Bull Rapids
Posted on 19:19 by Unknown
Two videos. On the first our 96 is tested by the people from the Red Bull Rapids event on stability on the water. It is much more heavier now and seems to be super stable. The second video is the evening before the event.
Update 2 : På Taket Saab 96 at Red Bull Rapids
Posted on 02:14 by Unknown
This video is from yesterday, from the firts swimming test of our amphibian Saab 96. Even much more worse weather didn't stopped the team to try it out. It swims ! :) Stability is a different story, but as this vessel will compete in a rafting channel, a keel makes no sense here. Only the crew balance.
The video is an facebook embed from one of the crew members. It's from the cargo harbour on the Danube river.
If you have troubles to see the video, at least some photos :
Maybe you want to know what it is all about and also see the previous first update.

Update 1 : På Taket Saab 96 at Red Bull Rapids
Posted on 01:27 by Unknown
Our amphibian Saab 96 is progressing to the final stage. Time is running out, new issues to solve are appearing. Late evenings are spent with the Saab model. Working on smoothing of the surface again and again. Today are the real stability on water tests.
Another set of considerations is the one minute "circuss" while coming to the water and launch the På Taket on the water. Since we don't know, where in the sports area will be the platform of start on the water, so we were there to look. And guess. There seems to be only two possibilities, but maybe we are completely out of the real plans. If yes, than improvisation will come.
Also some flyer work was done, to explain what På Taket means and why the name. The short story around is imho a strong one.
Note : I have to find out, how to make image galleries / lightbox in the blog post. This is getting too far. Of course there is no time for that. Right now even not in the evenings. A task for the near future.

På Taket amphibian Saab 96 at Red Bull Rapids competition
Posted on 02:08 by Unknown
The Red Bull Rapids annual event organised by Red Bull is challenging people to invent, design and create strange and funny "boats" which are competing each other at a one day competition. It happens in many countries around the world, including Slovakia.
This time our Puppy Hunters Saab Club decided to attend with a Saab car. Not with "just a regular Saab" but with the famous På Taket (on the roof) reminding on Erik Carlsoon and his legendary Saab 96 being several times on the roof.
So we decided to make a custom red Erik Carlsson Saab 96 model, which can swim on the roof and compete on the event. A 1:1 scale would be too much, but the model is pretty large, it still has to carry four mariners. The size of the vessel is reduced a bit (length x width x height) : 2,7m x 1,4m x 1m vs. original 4m x 1,57m x 1,47m.
The size is a compromise between hosting 4 people on board and transportation to the place of the competition. One of us has an old VW Bus, which can carry our Saab vessel wherever needed.
Actually this is a third amphibian (as we could find) Saab :) It can travel on the road as well as swim on the water. It has wheels on which it rides to the water and than with a bit of magic combined with muscle power converts itself into a vessel.
It's in advanced stage of creation. The finalising stage is right now and a bit hectic, because the event is this Saturday, 15.9.2012 in a rafting channel at Cunovo, near Bratislava.
You can support us by coming if you are near or just give a like to our På Taket - Red Bull Rapids
facebook page. And of course crossing fingers :)

The expression "Carlsson on the roof" originated from the children's story Karlsson på taket by Astrid Lindgren, in which a Karlsson character lived on the roof of an apartment building. The name was given to Carlsson as a result of his habit of occasionally rolling a rally car onto its roof. In the Safari Rally, he even rolled the car intentionally, to escape from a mud pool. When journalists later doubted his story, he proved it by rolling the car again. [src: wikipedia]

Saab Session Slovakia 2012
Posted on 08:40 by Unknown
I'd like to bring to attention the Saab Session Slovakia 2012, an event hosted and organised by the Saab Club Slovakia and a couple of friends. It is not a local event "only", but the intend is to bring together fans from other countries as well, mostly the neighbouring ones. Everybody is welcome. It is the first "edition" and the Saab Club hopes to start a tradition.
There are already registered a couple of people from Slovakia and Poland.
The date is 12-14. October 2012 and the place are the wonderful hills of Mala Fatra (Little Fatra). If the weather plays with Saab, these hills are in autumn simply beautiful, playing with all the colours when the nature prepares for the winter. The program contains a joint tour in the countryside, a historic forest railway drive, a visit of an outdoor museum with traditional slovak wooden houses as well as a couple of other things.
You can read the complete program, registration and all the necessary information in english.
You can also confirm your attendance on the facebook event Saab Session Slovakia 2012.
Despite the fact, that I'm a member of a different, unofficial and independent The Puppy Hunters Saab Club, this event is a Saab event, so my little help here is a certainty for me.
